01 / Planning note
Start with the actual building job
A storage shell, a shop with multiple overhead doors, a hay building, and a commercial-use structure may all share a broad label while requiring very different scopes. Use, size, height, openings, finishes, access, and site conditions change the work that must be coordinated.
A useful comparison starts with what the building has to accomplish today and what it may need to accomplish later.
02 / Planning note
Separate the building from the rest of the project
A building conversation can involve materials, engineering, delivery, erection, concrete, grading, drainage, utilities, site access, permits, and finishes. Treating all of those as one assumed number can make comparisons misleading.
Ask for a written scope that makes the included work, exclusions, allowances, and owner responsibilities visible.
03 / Planning note
Use a planning worksheet before asking for a quote
Bring the location, intended use, approximate width and length, preferred wall height, major openings, largest vehicle or implement, access notes, and photos when possible. The better the outline, the more productive the next conversation can be.
